Global Health Challenges

Make a difference by taking up a challenge and fundraise for the College!

Our International Strategy recognises the important role that pathology and laboratory medicine plays in strengthening the health systems of low and middle-income countries. In November 2015 the International Department established the Global Health Challenge scheme; a programme of challenge events aimed at raising unrestricted funds to support the delivery of some of the College’s international global health activities in low and middle-income countries. 

Since the pilot was launched, our Global Health Challengers have taken on a challenge and fundraised almost £25,000 for the College's global health projects. Funds raised in 2016 and 2017 were used to  establish a regional blood donation and transfusion service at Mubende Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda. In 2017, we began a contribution to the improvement of pathology services in Nepal. Read more about this project reducing maternal mortality in Uganda and how the funds you raised made a difference to mothers in Uganda. 

Take part in the 2019 Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100 Cycle Challenge

Prudential RideLondon is the world’s greatest festival of cycling where more than 26,000 amateur cyclists take on a cycling challenge like no other through London and Surrey on a similar route to that of the London 2012 Olympic Road Cycling Races.

As a ‘Golden Bond Charity’ with the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100, the College has guaranteed places for the 2019 challenge. This summer, there are still places if you want to join. We will look after you every step of the way, offering advice and tips, of course, the coveted College cycling vest! Registration fee is only £50 and a minimum sponsorship pledge of £500.

Impact of our work

How will the funds raised be spent?

The Royal College of Pathologists has a long-established commitment and track record of contributing to the improvement of pathology and laboratory medicine services in under-resourced countries through education and training. 100% of the money you raise from taking part in this challenge will be used to support and deliver the College’s global health work. This work includes laboratory systems strengthening projects and activities such as:

• Sending volunteer pathologists overseas to mentor and train laboratory staff in low income countries; 
• Providing education bursaries to overseas doctors and scientists, which will allow them to undertake a period of specialist training, research or study either within their country or externally; and
• Working with others to re-build the laboratory systems in countries where the health system has been weakened as a result of a humanitarian disaster or emergency situation.
